About Janna Banks, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., CDCES
With over 10 years of experience as a registered dietitian and 5 years as a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), Janna Y. Banks is dedicated to empowering individuals with diabetes to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. She has experience working with both pediatric and adult populations and specializes in the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as prediabetes. Janna also has a strong clinical focus on the use of diabetes technology, including insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, and is a certified pump trainer, helping patients navigate these tools to enhance their self-management.
Janna earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University and a Master of Science in Nutrition Education from Columbia University's Teachers College. Her clinical approach is grounded in empathy, active listening, and evidence-based strategies, all of which foster trust and encourage patient engagement. She incorporates a variety of communication techniques to support behavior change, drawing from a diverse toolkit that includes motivational strategies, reflective questioning, and collaborative goal-setting.
Janna believes in a person-centered approach to care, working closely with both patients and healthcare providers to create tailored, comprehensive plans that address individual needs. Beyond her clinical work, Janna is passionate about community outreach and education. She has delivered nutrition talks to a variety of groups, including the 92nd Street Y, the Entertainment Community Fund, and Mount Sinai Parent, and has trained residents, fellows, and dietetic interns.
